A portion of the state Thruway, also called Interstate 90, is closed near the western border with Pennsylvania as heavy lake effect snow keeps falling Friday evening.
As of about 5:30 p.m., the westbound side of the Thruway was closed from Exit 57 at Hamburg, according to the state authority.
That means all drivers headed west are being forced off at Exit 57, about 60 miles from the state’s western border with Pennsylvania.
Earlier this afternoon, the state had closed the Thruway from Exit 59 at Dunkirk, about 30 miles from the state line. The Pennsylvania side of I-90 is also closed.
The Thruway is asking all motorists to avoid the Thruway west of Lackawanna.
A state of emergency has been called in 11 counties in Western and Northern New York as intense and potentially dangerous bands of lake effect snow begin to move into those areas today.
